This is the Yankatu tree's strongest message.
Every culture has different celebrations and symbologies, but they all know
the importance of each for the well-being of the whole. We need to join forces
understand that, at heart, we are all brothers and sisters, one family,
children of the Earth, that she and all that lives on her deserve respect, for we are all linked and one person's action has an impact on the life of another, even if the other is miles away. In the "Yankatu tree", which today is the symbol of the Amazonie
event taking place in Brussels, Belgium, this importance is clearly
visible. Created in 2021 at the invitation of curator Waldick Jatobá for the Hotel Tivoli
Mofarrej in São Paulo, the tree carries with it the strength of ancestry and the hope of a better future.
More than a thousand threads of buriti and cotton join together to transmit
an incredible strength. Buriti threads made by the women of the village of Kaupüna, from the Mehinaku ethnic group, in the indigenous territory of Xingu, Brazil. Threads that carry ancestral ancestral knowledge, created by the union of delicate buriti straws wrapped around the thighs in back-and-forth movements. To these are added cotton yarns, which are naturally dyed with Mattricaria mangarataia, symbolizing the sun,
the constantly circulating energy of life.
The carved structure in solid jequitibá, inspired by indigenous hollows as places of shelter and protection symbolizes the welcoming of life and dreams. Made up of several trunks, it reinforces reinforces the message that we need to be united to build a better a better future.
